Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Dev Encyclopedia (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates devencyclopedia.com — a free reference site providing articles, guides, and tools for software developers. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what rights you have regarding your data.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information in two ways: information you provide directly and information collected automatically when you use the site.

Information You Provide

  • Email address — when you subscribe to our newsletter
  • Name and email — when you submit a contact, support, or contribution form
  • Company name and message — when you submit an advertising inquiry

Information Collected Automatically

  • Pages visited and time spent on the site
  • Referring URL and browser/device type
  • General location (country/region level)
  • Interactions such as clicks and scroll depth

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To send newsletter emails to subscribers (you can unsubscribe at any time)
  • To respond to contact form submissions and support requests
  • To review and follow up on contribution or advertising inquiries
  • To understand how visitors use the site so we can improve content and performance
  • To detect and prevent abuse or spam submissions

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

3. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar storage technologies for the following purposes:

  • Theme preference — a localStorage key stores your light/dark mode choice. No expiry, never sent to any server.
  • Analytics — we use PostHog to track pageviews and feature usage in aggregate. PostHog stores a cookie to distinguish unique visitors.

You can disable cookies in your browser settings. Note that disabling certain cookies may affect site functionality.

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services. Each operates under its own privacy policy.

PostHog

We use PostHog for product analytics. PostHog tracks events such as pageviews, feature interactions, and form submissions in aggregate. No personally identifiable information is sent to PostHog. See the PostHog Privacy Policy.

Email Delivery

We use Nodemailer with a trusted SMTP provider to send transactional emails (newsletter confirmations, form acknowledgements). Your email address is used only for the purpose for which it was submitted.

Database Storage

Subscriber email addresses and form submissions are stored securely in MongoDB Atlas. Data is retained only for as long as necessary to fulfil its purpose and is not accessible to unauthorised parties.

5. Data Retention

We retain your email address for as long as you are subscribed to our newsletter. Contact form submissions are kept for up to 12 months for reference purposes and then deleted. You may request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us.

6. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate information
  • Deletion — request that we delete your personal data
  • Unsubscribe — opt out of newsletter emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send
  • Objection — object to the processing of your data for analytics purposes

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@devencyclopedia.com. We will respond within 30 days.

7. Children’s Privacy

Dev Encyclopedia is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
